This work was originally commissioned to be included Extra Bold by Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Tobias. Asked to reference Alfred Barr’s Cubism and Abstract Art diagram, we set to work. Looking across antiquity, we began to notice key moments of political instability and uprisings that coincided with aesthetic and cultural movements within the expansive queer community. Not an exhaustive list by any means, this piece begins to map out these key nodes in history to illustrate the lineages and connections that bind us to the past and future. This work has also been printed in Black, Queer, and Untold by Jon Key, and has also been curated for exhibition in the Ford Foundation Gallery’s show Reverberations: Lineages in Design History.
