I was tasked with designing advertisements & commemorative programs for the Miami University Dance Theatre in collaboration with photographer Jeff Sabo. The goal for this project was to enhance the integrity of the photography using typography and subtle color choices to bring forth the idea of a "Poster as Art." Too often are posters for performing art shows thrown away after the last curtain call—we wanted to change that. Aside from the desire to design advertisements that are visually stunning, it was imperative to create a series that is not only beautiful, but functional.
I aimed to create an advertisement that captured the weightlessness that is an inherent characteristic to contemporary dance. This poster series utilizes condensed typography to imply a vertical motion that has trapped the dancers. When presented with such beautiful photography, I didn't want to create a design that commanded attention, but rather a design that works in tandem with the photos. This emphasizes the connection between dancers and the audience that is felt during a performance.
The photography was provided by Miami University photographer, Jeff Sabo.
